my Body is an etching 2

 Description

My body is an etching, criss-crossed by grooves, gouges, grazes and feather-like marks. They are scraped into my mind, nerves and muscle fibres of my body. Some marks are deep, acid bathed; others are the result of perseverance and bloody mindedness. Some are light whispers: flickers of kindness on my body-plate at opportune times.

This particular etching is 20-years old. In coming back to it, I wondered if, like a print from an etching, my subsequent performances would become lesser in quality, lower in value.  What could be said that wasn’t said before?

A great deal, as it turns out. Each time I perform this solo, I find new meaning and connections, a depth that wasn’t there before, courage that I never had before and this helps me to be the artist I wish to be.

This solo was first presented at the BOLD festival, Canberra, 2017. Images and video here. Review: http://michellepotter.org/news/bold-dances-national-portrait-galler
