Fine Lines CLASS

Classes

Fine Lines is a community that engages in contemporary dance practices that challenge, inspire and positively nourish them as dancers and artists. Fine Lines pedagogy is constantly evolving, responsive to changes and developments in style, teaching innovations and the needs of the dancers enrolled in classes. As the contemporary landscape shifts, as bodies change and as practice opens up new horizons, we shift and morph as well, ever alive to new possibilities.

Fine Lines Friday 10 - 11.30 am.

On Fridays, class is at an intermediate level. We work to fine tune awareness, strength, balance, coordination, musicality, memory, creativity and artistry. We use varied styles and approaches such as improvisation, a range of contemporary, ballet and release techniques including somatic approaches. This class includes floor work.

All classes are at Dancehouse 150 Princes St, Carlton North, VIC, unless otherwise stated. At times Dancehouse availability is limited by in-house productions which require us to find alternative spaces. In 2026 the alternative space for Friday classes is Fleming Park Hall, 102 Victoria Street, Brunswick East, VIC. In Term 1 classes are there from 13 Feb – 3 April (inclusive) and in Term classes are at Fleming Park from 8th May – 5th June (inclusive).

Fine Lines Tuesday
10 - 11.30 am.
Fine Lines is the entry point to all things Fine Lines, a unique philosophical and pedagogical approach to dance and dance making. Through technical contemporary movement practices and creative explorations dancers learn to appreciate and luxuriate in their dancing body of today. Fine Lines Foundations is the first step or a gentle continuation in your journey to develop your capacity as a mature dancer and artist as dancers and as artist. Anyone from Fridays may attend, but this class essentially takes its time to drill down into the FL philosophical and pedagogical approach to dance and dance making.

All classes are at Dancehouse, 150 Princes St, Carlton, VIC unless otherwise stated. In 2026 the alternative space for Tuesday classes is Green Monday Studios, 73 Grattan Street, Carlton, VIC. Class will be there in Term 1 (Tues 10, 17 Feb 2026 and 3, 10, 17, 24 Mar 2026) and Term 2 (Tues 26 May and Tues 2 Jun 2026).

Please note that for safe dance reasons, in order to participate in Fine Lines productions or special opportunities, dancers must engage regularly in either Friday or Tuesday classes.

Fine Lines terms align with Victorian public school holidays:

Term 1 Tuesday 27 January - Friday 3 April

Term 2 Monday 20 April - Friday 26 June

Term 3 Monday 13 July - Friday 18 September

Term 4 Monday 5 October - Friday 18 December

Benefits of dance, what the research says.

There is an emerging body of research regarding the benefits of dance activity for older people . The research offers a qualitative assessment of the health benefits, social inclusion, and community participation offered by dance activity.* Dancing involves the whole body, activating joints and muscle groups, improving balance, posture, coordination, control, flexibility and strength, increasing body and spatial awareness, playing an important role in falls prevention and neurological health. As a social activity, it provides an avenue for engaging with friends old and new, while learning and building new physical and artistic skills together.

Dance is well known to improve the mental health and well being of participants that dance together on a regular basis. Because the body is the instrument of the dance, it requires self care, agency and cooperation. It requires participant-dancers to value and appreciate their own bodies, minds and lived experience. Dancers who work in this way value the contribution of all dancers in the group and work together to support each other’s personal, creative and artistic growth and exploration. When dance is pursued as a creative and artistic art form, participants are challenged cognitively and creatively, contributing to feelings of self-worth, enthusiasm for life and pleasure.

A bit about our training:

Fine Lines focuses on inclusion and developing a pedagogy where every body has equal access to movement propositions. While many Fine Lines dancers were professional dancers or professionally trained, many others come from diverse movement backgrounds such as yoga, pilates, creative dance, improvisation, physical theatre and circus.

Classes develop skills that all dancers need: proprioception, kinesthetic and spatial awareness, balance, control, agility, articulation, flexibility, co-ordination, strength, endurance, memory, musicality, creative expression and artistry, while pushing our dancers creatively to discover, invent or interpret ideas.
