Fine Lines CLASS

Fine Lines is a community of people who engage in contemporary dance practices that challenge, inspire and positively nourish them.

In 2025 Fine Lines Friday classes for those already engaged in Fine Lines continue. In Term 1 classes vary.

When we’re at Dancehouse, the class is split into 2 groups: an early 9.30-11am group and a late 11.15am-12.45pm group. However, we're not always at Dancehouse on Fridays. We then try to use Elevation Dance Studios. At these times class is combined and runs from 10-12 noon. This is a big class and isn’t open to new dancers generally.

Class is at an intermediate level and works for awareness, strength, balance, coordination, musicality, memory, creativity and artistry. We use varied styles and approaches such as improvisation, contemporary dance, ballet basics, kinesiology and other somatic techniques.

Dates for Fine Lines Fridays
Where: All classes are at Dancehouse unless otherwise stated. Dancehouse is located at 150 Princes St, Carlton North, Victoria, Australia.

Benefits of dance, what the research says.

There is an emerging body of research regarding the benefits of dance activity for older people . The research offers a qualitative assessment of the health benefits, social inclusion, and community participation offered by dance activity.* Dancing involves the whole body, activating joints and muscle groups, improving balance, posture, coordination, control, flexibility and strength, increasing body and spatial awareness, playing an important role in falls prevention and neurological health. As a social activity, it provides an avenue for engaging with friends old and new, while learning and building new physical and artistic skills together.

Dance is well known to improve the mental health and well being of participants that dance together on a regular basis. Because the body is the instrument of the dance, it requires self care, agency and cooperation. It requires participant-dancers to value and appreciate their own bodies, minds and lived experience. Dancers who work in this way value the contribution of all dancers in the group and work together to support each other’s personal, creative and artistic growth and exploration. When dance is pursued as a creative and artistic art form, participants are challenged cognitively and creatively, contributing to feelings of self-worth, enthusiasm for life and pleasure.

A bit about our training:

Fine Lines focuses on inclusion and developing a pedagogy where every body has equal access to movement propositions. While many Fine Lines dancers were professional dancers or professionally trained, many others come from diverse movement backgrounds such as yoga, pilates, creative dance, improvisation, physical theatre and circus.

Classes develop skills that all dancers need: proprioception, kinesthetic and spatial awareness, balance, control, agility, articulation, flexibility, co-ordination, strength, endurance, memory, musicality, creative expression and artistry, while pushing our dancers creatively to discover, invent or interpret ideas.
